Senate Passes Vote To Allow Debate On Immig Bill

The Senate has passed a vote 64 - 35 allowing debate on the immigration reform bill. This is the first of three votes we need the Senate to pass. The second - which would limit the debate to a timely manner - is expected to take place tomorrow. Please keep sending those faxes. This is the week to put all our effort into lobbying our Senators.

With the initial rejection in the senate i was disappointed to say the least. And today things are certainly looking up. Commentators giving the bill almost no chance, 10% by one, are now giving it 50/50. Perhaps this is the hard fight now that can't be lost. Tell your friends, colleagues, relatives anyone that will listen that Washington needs to know how not going forward will affect us.

But, have you seen the current bill & its amendments?

How many people would come out of the shaddows, pay huge fines and wait more than 10 years to be eligible to get a green card?

This is a bad law. I admit I'm conflicted about this.

The other problem is that if this passes, this will be it, for a very long time...

If I may leave another comment... The immigrant community is divided, because this bill is not as good as it should've been. This has resulted in the vocal minority on the conservative side to be much more loud and dominate the debate with words like "amnesty" "security" etc...

It's been a strategic mistake to try to pacify and get on board those who are fundamentally opposed to immigration (and any reasonable reform) by giving them more and more in hoping of getting their support, and, thus, resulting in a bad bill.

The best approach, imho, would have been to do what's right, pass it or wait for the next Congress & president.
Those who've been here for a number of years (citizens in reality), should be given a green card after a criminal check. It should be done fast and with reasonable fees. This would be the best approach to bring them out of the shaddows. If we set the bar too high (as it seems right now) there will be many millions who'd not come forth.

It's ridiculous to have people who are part of this country for many years (some decades) and can't have legal standing....

Amnesty? We've ALREADY given amnesty to US businesses that have benefitted from this hard-working and low cost labor force.

True the bill is far from perfect. The arbitrary date set to be in the country un-documented and not taking into account how long the person is here, high cost to regularize, the wait period to become a citizen.

Yes not ideal but i can't see anything better coming out of Washington for a long time. I don't think people affected by this issue can wait any longer.

The politicians involved in pushing this bill through seem to be aware that there those who would not vote for this no matter what sugar coating you added to it but perhaps the wavering votes can be brought on board by adding a few bonuses and cutting off a few minor parts but keeping the fundamentals more or less intact.

Waiting a couple of years for a better bill. A gamble. If a good bill could'nt be put together in the past 18 months. I doesn't seem plausible we will have a better one in 2 years. Push for this bill ain't perfect but it's on the floor now!
